Couples Therapy

Every relationship has its ups and downs. However, when life gets stressful or specific events occur - whether big or small - the strain may become too much to handle alone or together.

Whether you have been together a long time or are just starting out on your journey together, when you run into difficult moments or topics in your relationship, couples therapy can help. Sometimes, an outside, objective third party may be the best way to help resolve those issues that are negatively affecting your relationship.

Why seek couples therapy / marriage counselling?

Couples seek therapy when they are facing issues such as: high conflict, unresolved past issues, infidelity, differences in values, problems communicating, life transitions, and many more.

More and more married couples are seeking out marriage counselling early on in their relationships - a move the majority says helps them deal with hurdles like communication problems.

Does couples therapy / marriage counselling work?

For couples therapy to be effective, both partners need to be willing to take responsibility for their part in the problems, to accept each other's faults, and to be motivated to repair the relationship.

The good news is that couples therapy as it is currently practiced—using Emotionally-Focused Therapy (EFT)—is now roughly 75 percent effective. Psychology Today

The truth is that there are many factors that can impact the potential success or failure of couples therapy for any given couple.

Our experienced couples counsellors are here to help you navigate major life challenges and develop new patterns of interaction - teaching you skills that are vital to restoring and maintaining a healthier relationship. However, it is not a therapist’s responsibility to ‘fix’ the relationship. The main factor that determines the effectiveness of couples therapy / marriage counselling is the motivation level of both partners.

If you are both willing to explore your problems from a new perspective, couples therapy may be effective for you. By having realistic expectations (it takes more than a few sessions) you will be able to begin the process of change needed to move forward.

How can couples therapy / marriage counselling help you?

  • Build improved communication and listening skills

  • Develop self-help skills for building and maintaining a relationship based on mutual respect

  • Improve conflict resolution skills and find a process for resolving conflict

  • Increase the courage, confidence and trust needed to restore intimacy

  • A neutral space to help you work through tough issues or put aside the baggage that is preventing you from moving forward

How we can help

Couples can expect to work hard in couples therapy through sharing their perspectives, emotions and experiences in sessions.

Let’s talk about it!

We recognize that the idea of couples therapy may feel daunting. That’s why we offer free 30 minute consultations to help you determine if virtual couples therapy / marriage counselling services at everwell will be right for you. During your free consultation, we take the time and care to understand your unique challenges and goals and what you are looking for from therapy. Based on your specific requirements, we’ll be able to match you with the therapist that best suits your unique needs, preferences and schedule.

Your therapist will get to know you to understand your personal experience, and based on this information, they will utilize a variety of counselling methods, tailoring an approach that best meets your individual preferences and needs. Our couples counsellors use Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFT) and we also have counsellors trained in the Gottman Method.

Within both approaches, couples improve their relationship through a focus on emotions and their impact on the individuals themselves and the relationship as a whole. We focus on the unique patterns of interaction that are at play in your relationship and work with you to understand the emotions at the heart of these patterns. The result is often a relationship that is supportive, emotionally attuned and resilient in the face of life stressors.
